Book Review: A Wicked Thing

It’s such a wicked thing that I spent most of my time cursing this book instead of appreciating it.  A Wicked Thing is not exactly a retelling of Sleeping Beauty but more of a sequel telling us the ‘what-could-have-been’ after Princess Aurora woke up and decided that the Prince is not hot enough to be her true love. With A Wicked Thing, Thomas proved that there are really many ways on how to spin a yarn and what she did with this well-worn tale is definitely inventive and refreshing. I liked that the author didn’t the follow the usual fairy…

Book Review: Empire of Shadows

I love the cover. That’s the only positive thing that I can think of about Empire of Shadows.  Although it’s already the second book of the Bhinian Empire Series, it’s actually a prequel of book 1, A City of A Thousand Dolls.  It tells the story of Mara and Emil Arvi, the deceased parents of our protagonist in book 1, Nisha Arvi.  While I don’t have any issues with that, I still can’t understand why it was necessary for this book to exist other than vex the readers maybe or milk the cow some more. Book 1 was already crystal…

Book Review: Red Queen

This one’s a disappointment. Instead of a book hangover, Red Queen left me questioning myself whether its positive points are worth the pain that I have to go through while reading the whole thing.  It’s not essentially a bad book but I just can’t connect with the story, with the characters, and the whole love quadrangle.  The premise, while not that original, was I think one of the reasons why I picked up this book.  Got to admit that I wasn’t over the whole Red Rising craze and I thought that the Red Queen would fill the gap left by…

Book Review: House of Ivy and Sorrow

I think I should take a break from reading ARCs. I swear that this is the nth ARC I’ve given a less than 3 star rating this year.  And it makes me feel guilty because most of the ARCs that I’ve reviewed are debut novels. It’s like I am the Grinch, hellbent on crushing the dreams of new authors. >,< Though the House of Ivy & Sorrow was a pretty decent read, the calculator side of my personality wouldn’t just give in. There are so many reasons for me to enjoy this book but things were just off.  I was…
